If you own a gold chain, its value is not determined by how large it looks or what it originally cost at a jewelry store.
For most gold chains, the starting point is surprisingly simple:
Gold chain value = weight × gold purity × current gold price
But that is only the beginning.
The karat of the chain, its actual tested purity, whether it is solid or gold-filled, the amount of non-gold material, its brand, condition, and whether it has resale value as jewelry can all affect what it is worth.
At Gold Kings, we regularly evaluate gold chains along with rings, bracelets, earrings, coins, bullion, and other precious-metal items. A professional evaluation can determine what your chain actually contains before you decide whether you want to sell it.
Quick Answer: What Determines the Value of a Gold Chain?
The five biggest factors are:
- Weight — usually measured in grams or pennyweights.
- Gold purity — such as 10K, 14K, 18K or 22K.
- Current gold spot price — the market price of pure gold.
- Actual precious-metal content — including deductions for stones or non-gold components.
- Jewelry or collectible value — some chains may be worth more than their gold alone.
For an ordinary broken or unwanted gold chain, weight and purity usually have the greatest effect on value.
If you want to understand what your chain contains before selling it, Gold Kings can test and weigh gold jewelry at our Snellville location or Commerce location.
Step 1: Determine How Much the Gold Chain Weighs
Gold buyers commonly weigh jewelry in grams or pennyweights (dwt).
The heavier the chain, the more gold it can potentially contain.
A 40-gram 14K chain generally contains roughly twice as much gold as a 20-gram 14K chain, assuming both chains actually test at the same purity.
This is why simply looking at a chain is not enough.
A thick chain may be hollow and surprisingly light, while a smaller solid chain can contain considerably more gold.
Hollow vs. Solid Gold Chains
A hollow gold chain can still be real gold.
“Hollow” simply means the links were manufactured with empty space inside them.
If a hollow chain weighs 15 grams and a solid chain weighs 30 grams, the solid chain contains substantially more metal even if the two chains look similar in size.
For scrap-gold value, actual weight matters much more than visual size.
Step 2: Determine the Karat or Gold Purity
Pure gold is 24 karat.
Most jewelry is mixed with metals such as copper, silver, nickel or zinc to make it stronger and change its color.
Here is the approximate gold content of common karats:
| Gold Mark | Approximate Pure Gold |
|---|---|
| 10K / 417 | 41.7% |
| 14K / 585 | 58.3%–58.5% |
| 18K / 750 | 75% |
| 22K / 916 | 91.6%–91.7% |
| 24K / 999 | About 99.9% |
So two chains that weigh exactly the same can have dramatically different values.
A 20-gram 18K chain contains significantly more pure gold than a 20-gram 10K chain.
If your chain is marked 585, read our guide to what 585 means on gold.
For higher-purity jewelry, our guide to 916 and 22K gold explains another stamp commonly found on gold chains.
Does the Stamp on a Gold Chain Prove Its Purity?
No.
A hallmark is useful information, but it should not automatically be treated as proof of what the entire chain contains.
Gold jewelry can be:
- Incorrectly marked
- Plated
- Gold-filled
- Repaired with different metals
- Made from components with different purities
- Worn enough that the original hallmark is difficult to read
- Completely unmarked
A chain stamped 14K may test close to 14K, above it or below it.
That is one reason professional testing matters when determining value.
Gold Kings uses professional precious-metal testing equipment, including XRF technology where appropriate, to help determine what an item actually contains. Testing different areas of a piece can be especially important when the jewelry has been repaired or contains multiple components.
You can also read our explanation of whether real gold has to be stamped.
Step 3: Calculate How Much Pure Gold Is in the Chain
Once you know the chain’s weight and purity, you can estimate its pure-gold content.
Suppose you have a:
20-gram 14K gold chain
14K gold is approximately 58.3% pure.
The calculation:
20 grams × 0.5833 = approximately 11.67 grams of pure gold
The chain weighs 20 grams overall, but only about 11.67 grams of that theoretical weight represents pure gold.
The rest is alloy metal.
To convert the pure gold into troy ounces:
11.67 ÷ 31.1035 = approximately 0.375 troy ounces of pure gold
You can then multiply that figure by the current gold spot price.
Formula
Chain weight × purity ÷ 31.1035 × gold spot price = approximate melt value
For a 14K chain:
Weight in grams × 0.5833 ÷ 31.1035 × spot price
For an 18K chain:
Weight in grams × 0.75 ÷ 31.1035 × spot price
Gold prices change throughout the trading day, so using a fixed dollar amount in an online article can quickly become outdated. Gold Kings uses current market information when evaluating precious metals. You can learn more about how Gold Kings uses gold and silver market prices.
Melt Value Is Not the Same as the Amount a Buyer Pays
This is one of the most important things to understand when asking:
“How much is my gold chain worth?”
Melt value represents the theoretical value of the pure gold contained in the item at the current spot price.
A gold buyer’s offer and the chain’s melt value are not necessarily identical.
A buyer may need to account for factors including:
- Refining costs
- Processing
- Market-price movement
- Business expenses
- Required holding periods
- Risk
- Non-gold material
- The ability to resell the chain as jewelry
When comparing offers, do not ask only:
“How much will you pay?”
Also ask:
“What does the chain weigh, what purity did it test, and what gold price are you using?”
Those numbers make it much easier to understand how an offer was calculated.
Do Clasps and Other Parts Affect Gold Chain Value?
They can.
A chain may contain components that do not have exactly the same gold content as the main links.
Examples include:
- Clasp mechanisms
- Springs
- Solder
- Connecting rings
- Repair sections
- Pendants
- Stones or diamonds
- Non-gold inserts
A professional evaluator should consider the actual precious-metal content rather than blindly multiplying the entire scale weight by the karat stamped on one part of the chain.
This becomes particularly important with large or unusual pieces.
What If the Chain Has a Pendant?
The pendant should often be evaluated separately.
For example, you could have:
- A 14K chain with an 18K pendant
- A 10K chain with a 14K pendant
- A real-gold chain with a gold-plated pendant
- A gold chain holding a diamond pendant
Different pieces can have different purities and different types of value.
A diamond or valuable gemstone may also deserve a separate evaluation rather than simply being treated as scrap.
Gold Kings evaluates multiple types of valuables in addition to gold. See what Gold Kings buys for more information.
Are Designer Gold Chains Worth More?
Sometimes.
Not every gold chain should automatically be valued for melting.
A chain from a recognized jewelry maker may have resale value that exceeds its precious-metal value, particularly when it is:
- Authentic
- In good condition
- A desirable design
- Accompanied by original documentation or packaging
- From a recognized luxury brand
The same principle can apply to antique or unusual jewelry.
Before selling an expensive chain solely for its gold content, it can make sense to determine whether the complete piece has additional resale value.
Does a Broken Gold Chain Lose Its Gold Value?
Usually, not much if it is being valued primarily for its gold content.
If a 14K chain breaks but still contains the same amount of gold, the precious metal did not disappear.
Broken chains, tangled chains, damaged clasps and single pieces of unwanted jewelry can still have significant gold value.
Condition matters much more when the item is being sold as wearable jewelry rather than for its precious-metal content.
If your chain is damaged, see our guide to selling broken gold jewelry.
Solid Gold vs. Gold-Filled or Gold-Plated Chains
This distinction can dramatically affect value.
A solid 14K chain contains approximately 58.3% gold throughout the gold alloy.
A gold-plated chain usually has only a very thin layer of gold over another base metal.
Gold-filled jewelry contains more gold than ordinary plating, but it is still not the same as solid-karat gold.
That means two chains that look nearly identical can have completely different precious-metal values.
If you are uncertain what you own, read our guide to gold-filled vs. solid gold.
Do not assume a yellow chain is solid gold simply because of its color.
How Gold Kings Evaluates a Gold Chain
When evaluating a gold chain, the goal should be to understand the numbers behind its value.
At Gold Kings, the process can include:
1. Examine the Chain
We look for karat marks, fineness stamps, manufacturer marks and anything unusual about the construction.
2. Test the Metal
Professional precious-metal testing can help determine whether the chain’s actual composition agrees with its markings.
3. Weigh the Chain
Accurate weight is essential because precious-metal value depends heavily on how much gold is actually present.
4. Consider Non-Gold Components
If necessary, stones, clasps or other materials are considered when determining precious-metal value.
5. Check the Current Gold Market
Gold prices constantly change, so the value calculation should use current market information rather than an outdated price.
6. Consider Whether the Chain Has Additional Value
Certain designer, collectible, antique or otherwise desirable pieces may need to be evaluated differently from ordinary scrap jewelry.
7. Explain the Offer
You should be able to understand what you have before deciding whether you want to sell it.
That transparency is important whether you have one small chain or an entire collection of jewelry.
How Can I Estimate My Gold Chain’s Value at Home?
You can make a rough estimate if you know:
- Weight in grams
- Karat
- Current gold spot price
Use:
Weight × karat purity ÷ 31.1035 × current gold spot price
For example, with a 20-gram 14K chain:
20 × 0.5833 = 11.67 grams pure gold
11.67 ÷ 31.1035 = approximately 0.375 troy ounces
Then:
0.375 × current gold spot price = approximate theoretical gold value
Remember that this is an estimate.
It assumes the entire measured weight matches the stated purity and does not account for non-gold components, testing differences, refining or the buyer’s offer.
Where Can I Sell a Gold Chain Near Me?
If you are searching for a gold buyer near me, sell gold jewelry near me, or a place to find out how much your gold chain is worth, look for a buyer who will explain the evaluation rather than simply give you a number.
You should be able to understand:
- The chain’s weight
- Its tested purity
- The current gold price
- Its approximate precious-metal value
- How the offer was calculated

Frequently Asked Questions About Gold Chain Value
How much is a 14K gold chain worth?
It depends primarily on its weight, actual purity and the current gold price.
A 14K chain theoretically contains about 58.3% pure gold. Multiply its weight by approximately 0.5833 to estimate the amount of pure gold it contains.
Is 18K gold worth more than 14K gold?
Per gram, yes.
18K gold contains approximately 75% pure gold, while 14K contains roughly 58.3%.
If two chains weigh exactly the same, an 18K chain normally contains substantially more pure gold.
Does a heavy gold chain mean it is valuable?
If it is solid-karat gold, heavier weight generally means more precious-metal value.
But weight alone does not prove that an item is gold. A heavy plated chain can contain very little gold.
Purity must also be established.
Are hollow gold chains worth money?
Yes.
A hollow chain can be genuine 10K, 14K, 18K or another gold purity. Its value is based largely on the amount of precious metal it contains.
Because hollow chains contain less metal, they may weigh much less than similarly sized solid chains.
Does a broken clasp reduce the value?
If the chain is being purchased for its gold content, a broken clasp usually has much less impact than it would on retail jewelry value.
Its gold content can still have value.
Can a chain stamped 14K actually contain less gold?
Yes.
A hallmark is a useful clue, not a substitute for testing. Repairs, plating, mixed components, inaccurate markings or other factors can cause actual tested composition to differ.
Should I clean my chain before selling it?
Usually not if you are selling it primarily for gold content.
Cleaning does not increase the number of grams of gold in the chain.
For potentially collectible or antique jewelry, aggressive cleaning may actually be undesirable.
How do I know whether an offer for my chain is fair?
Ask for the underlying numbers.
You should know the weight, purity, current gold price and approximate precious-metal value before comparing offers.
Know What Your Gold Chain Is Worth Before You Sell It
A gold chain should not be valued by appearance or guesswork.
The most important questions are:
How much does it weigh?
What purity is it really?
What is gold trading for today?
Does the chain have value beyond its gold content?
Once you know those answers, its value becomes much easier to understand.
If you have a chain sitting in a jewelry box—whether it is broken, tangled, inherited, unwanted or simply something you no longer wear—Gold Kings can help determine what you actually have.
