If you want to sell diamonds in Georgia, the first step is understanding what you actually own and what determines its resale value.
A diamond ring that originally cost thousands of dollars may still have significant value, but the price paid at a jewelry store or shown on an insurance appraisal is not necessarily the amount a buyer will pay today.
At Gold Kings, we evaluate diamond jewelry and other valuables at our two Georgia locations in Snellville and Commerce. We look at the diamond itself, any available grading documentation, the condition of the piece and the value of the gold or platinum setting.
Whether you have an old engagement ring, wedding set, diamond earrings or inherited jewelry, you can have the piece evaluated before deciding whether selling makes sense.

How Much Is My Diamond Worth?
There is no single price-per-carat formula that accurately determines what every diamond is worth.
Two diamonds weighing exactly one carat can have very different market values.
A diamond buyer generally considers several characteristics.
Carat Weight
Carat measures the diamond’s weight.
Larger diamonds generally command higher prices, but carat weight alone does not determine value.
A high-quality 0.90-carat diamond can sometimes be more desirable than a lower-quality 1.00-carat diamond.
Cut
Cut describes how effectively a diamond’s proportions interact with light.
For round diamonds in particular, cut quality can have a substantial effect on desirability and market value.
Color
Most traditional white diamonds are graded on a scale running from D, which is colorless, through progressively more noticeable color grades.
Other things being equal, diamonds with higher color grades generally command stronger prices.
Clarity
Clarity evaluates inclusions and surface characteristics.
A diamond with fewer or less noticeable inclusions can be more valuable than another diamond of the same size.
Shape
Round brilliant diamonds have a different market from princess, oval, emerald, cushion, pear, marquise and other shapes.
Demand for individual shapes changes over time, so shape can affect what a buyer is willing to pay.
Certification
A grading report from a recognized laboratory can make a diamond easier to evaluate because important characteristics have already been independently documented.
Gold Kings’ existing diamond-buying service evaluates certified diamonds as well as many diamonds that do not have grading paperwork.
Your Jewelry Appraisal Is Not the Same as Resale Value
This is one of the most important things to understand before selling a diamond.
Suppose your engagement ring has an insurance appraisal of $10,000.
That does not automatically mean someone will purchase it from you for $10,000.
Insurance appraisals are generally designed around the cost of replacing an item through the retail jewelry market. A resale transaction operates in a different market.
Retail jewelry prices can include:
- Retail markup
- Store overhead
- Sales commissions
- Branding
- Financing costs
- Warranty or service programs
- Manufacturing and setting costs
A diamond buyer instead has to consider what a comparable diamond can currently be bought and sold for in the secondary or wholesale market.
For that reason, it is completely normal for a resale offer to be substantially different from the original retail purchase price or an insurance replacement appraisal.
Gold Kings has discussed this distinction for years in our Sell Diamonds in Atlanta guide.
The Setting Can Have Value Too
When you sell a diamond ring, the diamond is only part of the evaluation.
The setting may be made from:
10K gold • 14K gold • 18K gold • platinum • other precious metals
That metal can have its own value.
This is where precious-metal expertise becomes important.
At Gold Kings, professional precious-metal testing can be used to determine the composition of the ring or jewelry setting. XRF testing is useful for analyzing the metal—it does not grade the diamond itself.
The diamond and the precious-metal setting therefore need to be considered separately before the complete piece can be properly evaluated.
If you have several pieces of old or inherited jewelry, Gold Kings can also help identify which pieces contain valuable precious metals.

Natural Diamonds, Lab-Grown Diamonds and Diamond Simulants
Not every clear stone in a piece of jewelry has the same value.
A stone could be:
- A natural diamond
- A laboratory-grown diamond
- Moissanite
- Cubic zirconia
- Another gemstone or simulant
Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds can look extremely similar, but their resale markets are different.
That distinction matters when you’re trying to determine what a piece of jewelry is worth.
If you have paperwork from GIA, IGI or another grading laboratory, bring it with you. Documentation can make the identification and evaluation process easier.
If you are selling a loose laboratory-grown diamond or another unusual stone, it is a good idea to call Gold Kings before making a special trip because acceptance and resale markets can vary by item.
Do I Need a Diamond Certificate to Sell My Ring?
Not necessarily.
Many diamond earrings, older engagement rings, estate pieces and smaller diamonds were never individually certified.
If you have a grading report, bring it.
If you do not, don’t assume your diamond jewelry has no value.
A professional evaluation can still consider the diamond’s observable characteristics, condition and mounting.
Original receipts, appraisals, jewelry boxes and other paperwork can also be useful, but they are not necessarily required for an initial evaluation.
Should I Remove the Diamond From the Ring Before Selling It?
Usually, no.
Leave the jewelry intact unless a qualified professional has given you a specific reason to remove the stone.
Keeping the diamond in its original mounting reduces the risk of damaging or losing it and allows the buyer to evaluate both the diamond and the precious-metal setting.
Gold Kings’ diamond evaluation policy states that a diamond is not removed from its mounting without the owner’s prior permission.
Selling an Engagement Ring After a Divorce or Broken Engagement
Diamond engagement rings are among the most common pieces of jewelry people consider selling.
Sometimes the motivation is financial.
Other times, the owner simply no longer wants an expensive piece of jewelry sitting unused in a drawer.
Whatever the reason, there is no need to rush the decision.
First find out what you own.
Then find out what the realistic resale market looks like.
Once you understand the numbers, you can decide whether keeping the ring or selling it makes more sense for you.
Selling Inherited Diamond Jewelry
Inherited jewelry presents a different problem: you may have no idea what any of it is.
A jewelry box inherited from a parent or grandparent can contain a mixture of:
- Diamond jewelry
- Gold jewelry
- Platinum jewelry
- Sterling silver
- Costume jewelry
- Watches
- Gemstones
- Broken or mismatched pieces
Don’t assume an old-fashioned piece is worthless just because you would never wear it.
Likewise, don’t assume every large stone is an expensive diamond.
Having the collection examined can help separate pieces with meaningful value from ordinary costume jewelry.
Gold Kings also evaluates estate jewelry and multiple-item collections, so you can better understand what you have before deciding what to sell.

What Should I Bring When Selling a Diamond?
Bring the diamond jewelry itself and any documentation you already have.
Useful documents can include:
- GIA, IGI or other laboratory reports
- Previous jewelry appraisals
- Original receipts
- Manufacturer or designer paperwork
- Original boxes
- Repair records
Do not worry if these items are missing.
The jewelry itself is what ultimately has to be evaluated.
Designer Diamond Jewelry May Require Additional Evaluation
Brand and design can sometimes matter in addition to the diamond and precious-metal content.
Examples include jewelry from recognized makers such as Tiffany & Co. or Cartier.
Original packaging, receipts, serial numbers and documentation may become more important with branded jewelry because they can help establish authenticity and provenance.
Do not throw away original paperwork or boxes before having branded jewelry evaluated.
What Happens During a Diamond Evaluation?
The process depends on the item, but the goal is to understand both the stone and the piece of jewelry surrounding it.
A diamond buyer may examine the diamond’s apparent:
carat weight, cut, color, clarity, shape, condition and certification.
The setting is considered separately.
If the ring contains gold or platinum, Gold Kings can test and weigh the precious-metal portion and explain what was found.
The diamond can then be evaluated in relation to comparable stones and current market demand.
You receive an offer and decide whether you want to sell.
There is no reason you should feel pressured simply because someone has evaluated your jewelry.
Why the Highest Retail Appraisal Doesn’t Mean the Highest Cash Value
Many sellers understandably begin with this question:
“I paid $8,000 for this ring. Why isn’t it worth $8,000 now?”
The answer is that buying retail and selling into the secondary market are two different transactions.
The same principle applies to cars, watches, furniture and many other products.
The price a retailer charges a consumer includes costs and margins that may not exist when the same item is sold back into the market.
A useful diamond evaluation should therefore focus on the characteristics of the actual diamond, current comparable market pricing, the condition of the jewelry and the value of its precious-metal setting—not simply the number printed on an old appraisal.
Before You Sell Your Diamond in Georgia
Know what you’re selling before accepting an offer.
Bring any documentation you have.
Ask how the buyer arrived at the value.
Make sure the diamond and the gold or platinum setting are both being considered where appropriate.
Most importantly, remember that an evaluation gives you information. It does not obligate you to sell.
Frequently Asked Questions About Selling Diamonds in Georgia
Where can I sell a diamond ring in Georgia?
Gold Kings evaluates diamond jewelry at locations in Snellville and Commerce, Georgia. Which location is more convenient will depend on whether you are closer to Gwinnett County or Northeast Georgia.
Does Gold Kings buy diamond engagement rings?
Yes. Diamond engagement rings and wedding jewelry are among the types of diamond jewelry Gold Kings evaluates for purchase.
Does Gold Kings buy certified diamonds?
Gold Kings’ diamond-buying information specifically discusses GIA, IGI and other laboratory-certified diamonds. Bring the grading report with you whenever possible.
Can I sell a diamond without paperwork?
Many diamonds can still be evaluated without original paperwork. Certification is helpful, but the lack of an old receipt or appraisal does not automatically mean a piece has no resale value.
Is my insurance appraisal what my diamond is worth?
Usually not in a resale transaction. Insurance appraisals are commonly based on replacement value, while a buyer has to consider the current secondary and wholesale markets.
Does the gold in my diamond ring have value?
Yes, if the setting contains genuine gold or another valuable precious metal. Its purity and weight can be evaluated separately from the diamond.
Can XRF tell how good my diamond is?
No. XRF technology is used to analyze metals. It can be valuable for checking the gold or platinum surrounding a diamond, but diamond quality requires a separate gemological evaluation.
What if my diamond is chipped?
Condition affects value, so chips or other damage should be considered during the evaluation. The gold or platinum mounting may still have value even when a stone is damaged.
Do I need an appointment?
Gold Kings currently welcomes walk-in customers at both Georgia locations. For unusual stones or large collections, calling ahead can still be useful.
