A beep when the probe touches a setting may be a metal-contact warning, not a diamond result. Stop and check both the sound and the displayed indicator for your exact tester before interpreting it.
Identify which signal you heard
The Diamond Mate handbook distinguishes its intermittent metal alert from its continuous diamond-indication tone. The UltraTester 3+ uses a red metal-contact indication.
Those examples show why “it beeped” is an incomplete inspection note. Different instruments use different combinations of lights and sounds, and their signals should not be treated as interchangeable.
Keep the result legend from the matching manual nearby until you can identify each indication confidently.
Look at the contact point
A probe can slip from the stone’s surface onto a prong or touch both at once. Strong reflections, a crowded setting and an awkward grip can make that difficult to notice.
Use appropriate lighting and magnification to locate a suitable facet. Support your hands comfortably and approach the surface in the way the manufacturer specifies.
Do not push the tip between prongs or use it as a lever.
Check the grip as well as the probe
A tester may require contact with designated finger pads or a particular sample holder. Follow that instruction so the alert system can operate as intended.
If you cannot maintain the required grip while reaching the stone, change the setup or stop. Disabling the warning through incorrect handling does not produce a better test.
Retest only after correcting the problem
Remove the probe, reposition and follow any required interval or sample-temperature guidance. Then make a fresh test with clear contact on the stone.
If the setting prevents access, record that the test could not be completed reliably. Do not keep repeating it until an apparently favorable light appears.
For persistent unexplained alerts, check the manufacturer’s maintenance and support instructions rather than sanding or modifying the probe.
What to buy if this happens often
First determine whether you need better lighting, magnification or a different handling arrangement. Replacing the tester may not solve an access problem.
