Start with the pieces you handle
Write down the typical size, shape and construction of your items. Include awkward pieces rather than only smooth rings. Ask how each proposed instrument positions those samples, keeps the measurement area consistent and protects the operator.
A benchtop system may provide a defined chamber and repeatable placement. Whether a particular piece fits must be checked against the actual chamber and approved procedure. A handheld system offers portability, but small jewelry may call for a manufacturer-approved stand or enclosure.
Compare the complete working arrangement
Have the supplier show the whole setup, including any stand, shielding accessories and computer. Do not compare a fully equipped desktop quote with a bare handheld price. Ask what is required for your samples and which accessories are merely optional.
For either format, XRF uses ionizing radiation. Training and the manufacturer’s operating requirements belong in the purchase decision. Never hold a small sample in your hand in front of an active instrument.
Think about the customer interaction
At a counter, consider where the sample goes, where the operator stands and how results are explained. A screen visible to the customer can support transparency, but it should not display a number without explaining what was tested.
For work away from a fixed location, consider transport, power, authorized operating arrangements and secure storage. Portability is useful only when the complete process remains workable.
