An XRF demonstration should answer whether the exact system suits your work. Watching one polished sample produce a plausible number is an introduction, not a complete evaluation.
Bring a representative sample set
Work with the supplier to choose documented reference materials and ordinary items resembling what you handle. Include different shapes and finishes, with any limitations agreed in advance. Keep the operator’s procedure within the manufacturer’s approved use.
Record each sample’s identity before the session. If you later compare instruments, use the same sample set where appropriate. Changing both the equipment and the samples makes differences harder to interpret.
Watch the complete measurement
Ask to see positioning, reference checks, measurement settings and report creation. Record the test duration and whether the operator changed a mode between samples. Ask what a warning or inconclusive result means.
Repeat selected measurements after removing and repositioning a sample. Consistency can be informative, but close agreement between repeated readings does not independently establish that the result is correct. Compare with the reference information as well.
Test the reporting workflow
Request an exported report you can actually use. Check sample identifiers, dates, settings and whether the report describes the tested area. Ask how information is backed up and whether additional software charges apply.
Discuss an awkward result. A supplier’s ability to explain a limitation is valuable. A promise that the machine always identifies every item should invite further questions about the method and sample.
Agree on acceptance before payment
Write down the application, supplied configuration, training, accessories and agreed evaluation criteria. If the demonstration uses a different configuration from the quoted machine, ask the supplier to explain the difference before treating the results as relevant.
