Choose the reference required by the tester, not whichever gold item is closest to hand. A reliable calibration sample is part of the measuring system. Its purpose is to provide a known starting point, not to confirm what you hope an unknown ring contains.
Match the exact requirement

Calibration and checking are different jobs. After adjustment, a separate known sample can help reveal whether the routine makes sense beyond the calibration point. It does not certify the instrument’s performance across every alloy, but it can expose obvious setup errors.
