Electronic Gold Tester vs. XRF: What Each Can Tell You

Illustration of a pen-probe gold tester and a larger enclosed XRF analyzer beside gold jewelry.

Choose a pen-probe tester for gold-karat screening; consider XRF when your work requires information about several elements in an alloy. They answer different questions, and neither makes sample preparation or judgment unnecessary.

What are you trying to learn?

A KEE or AuRACLE PRO gives an electronic indication associated with gold karat ranges and can identify platinum within its specified use. X-ray fluorescence analyzes the elemental response of the tested area. The instrument’s configuration, calibration and software determine which elements and ranges it can report.

Thermo Fisher explains the XRF measurement principle: characteristic fluorescent X-rays help identify the elements present. Do not assume every machine advertised as XRF offers the same detector, calibration or reporting capabilities.

Question Pen-probe tester XRF analyzer
What result do I need? A gold-karat indication or platinum screening An elemental-composition report for the tested area
What should I budget for? Tester, reference sample and replacement probes Instrument, service, calibration, training and accessories
What can mislead me? Poor contact, probe condition and an unsuitable test surface Coatings, geometry, calibration and an unrepresentative test area
What should I request? Demonstration using known samples Reports on representative samples and a written support plan

Why a surface reading is not the whole object

A coating can differ from the underlying metal. Thermo Fisher notes that XRF generally measures surface composition and recommends checking multiple areas when plating is suspected. A convincing reading from one location does not prove an entire bar or complex jewelry item is homogeneous.

That matters when comparing a solid ring with a hollow item, plated chain or soldered assembly. Decide what the sample represents before interpreting the number. Use additional suitable methods when surface results do not settle the question.

The Gold Kings buying approach

For occasional jewelry checks, start by deciding whether professional testing is more sensible than owning equipment. For repeated screening, compare electronic testers and consumables. For a business evaluating multiple alloys, request an XRF demonstration before committing to a much larger purchase.

Questions to ask an XRF seller

  • Which elements and alloy ranges are included in this exact configuration?
  • Can you demonstrate it on known samples comparable to my work?
  • What calibration standards, software and reporting functions are supplied?
  • Who provides installation, operator training, repairs and warranty service?
  • What operating precautions apply to this model?

XRF uses ionizing radiation. Follow the manufacturer’s training and operating instructions, including its sample-handling and shielding requirements. Do not treat a handheld analyzer like an ordinary inspection camera.

How Selling Gold at Gold Kings Works

Yes. Gold Kings operates as a licensed precious-metals buyer in Georgia and follows applicable state requirements for buying gold and other precious metals.

Yes. We can test your gold while you are present and explain what the results show. We use professional testing methods, including XRF testing when appropriate, to help determine the metal’s actual composition.

Absolutely.  Your items can be weighed in front of you so you can see the weight used in the evaluation.

You get paid the same day, on the spot. Once your items are tested, weighed, and evaluated, we present a clear offer. If you accept, payment is issued immediately—no waiting, no delays.

We look at the item’s tested purity, precious-metal weight, current market price, and whether it has value beyond its metal content. For jewelry, we may also consider stones, brand, condition, collectibility, or resale potential when relevant.
