American Gold Buffalo Guide: Purity, Weight & Value

The American Gold Buffalo is one of the easiest U.S. gold coins to understand from a metal-content standpoint: the standard coin contains one full troy ounce of .9999 fine, 24-karat gold.

But determining what a Gold Buffalo is actually worth can be more complicated.

Its value can depend on the current gold price, whether the coin is a regular bullion issue or a proof, its year, condition, packaging, grading and collector demand.

If you own one and are considering selling it, you should know the difference between its gold value and its possible collector value before accepting an offer.

At Gold Kings, we evaluate gold coins and bullion with that distinction in mind. A recognized U.S. gold coin should not automatically be treated the same way as ordinary scrap gold.

American Gold Buffalo Quick Facts

The United States Mint’s American Buffalo program confirms that each standard one-ounce coin contains one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold.

That makes the Gold Buffalo significantly purer than many traditional circulating gold coins.

What Is an American Gold Buffalo?

The American Gold Buffalo was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 2006 and became the Mint’s first .9999 fine, 24-karat gold bullion coin.

Its design comes from James Earle Fraser’s famous 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel.

The obverse features Fraser’s Native American profile design.

The reverse features an American bison, along with inscriptions including:

  • UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
  • E PLURIBUS UNUM
  • IN GOD WE TRUST
  • $50
  • 1 OZ.
  • .9999 FINE GOLD

Although the coin says $50, that number has very little to do with what the coin is actually worth.

A genuine one-ounce Gold Buffalo contains thousands of dollars’ worth of gold at modern gold prices.

How Pure Is an American Gold Buffalo?

A standard American Gold Buffalo is:

99.99% pure gold

or:

.9999 fine gold

That is essentially 24-karat gold.

This is an important difference between the Gold Buffalo and the American Gold Eagle.

The Gold Buffalo is nearly pure gold, while the Gold Eagle contains gold alloyed with additional metals for durability.

Gold Buffalo vs. Gold Eagle

Feature American Gold Buffalo American Gold Eagle
Purity 99.99% 91.67%
Karat 24K 22K
Fine gold in 1 oz version 1 troy oz 1 troy oz
Approx. total weight 31.103 g 33.931 g
Face value $50 $50

Both one-ounce coins contain a full troy ounce of actual gold.

The difference is that the Gold Eagle weighs more overall because silver and copper are added to the alloy. The Gold Buffalo does not need that additional alloy weight because it is .9999 fine gold. U.S. Mint specifications list the one-ounce Gold Buffalo at approximately 31.103 grams and the one-ounce Gold Eagle at approximately 33.931 grams.

You can learn more about the differences between bullion products in our Gold Coins & Bullion guides.

How Much Does an American Gold Buffalo Weigh?

The standard Gold Buffalo weighs:

1 troy ounce — approximately 31.103 grams.

This is not the same as a regular household ounce.

A standard avoirdupois ounce contains about 28.35 grams.

A troy ounce, which is the measurement normally used for gold, silver, platinum and other precious metals, equals approximately 31.1035 grams.

That distinction matters.

If you put a genuine standard Gold Buffalo on a precise scale, you should expect a weight close to the U.S. Mint specification.

Weight is also one of the first things that should be checked when evaluating a questionable coin.

Does a Gold Buffalo Contain a Full Ounce of Gold?

Yes.

The standard American Gold Buffalo contains:

1.000 troy ounce of fine gold.

Because the coin is .9999 fine, almost its entire physical weight is gold.

This makes estimating its basic precious-metal value unusually simple:

Gold Buffalo metal value ≈ current gold spot price × 1 troy ounce

If gold is trading at $4,000 per ounce, the coin contains approximately $4,000 of gold.

If gold is trading at $4,500, its underlying gold value is approximately $4,500.

However, that is only the metal value.

It is not necessarily the amount someone will pay you for the coin, and it is not necessarily the coin’s retail value.

How Much Is an American Gold Buffalo Worth Today?

For a regular one-ounce bullion Gold Buffalo, the starting point is usually the current price of one ounce of gold.

Gold changes continuously.

For example, Kitco’s market data on August 23, 2026 displayed a U.S.-dollar gold price of approximately $4,602.40 per ounce. At that price, one standard American Gold Buffalo contains approximately $4,602.40 in underlying gold value before considering premiums, spreads or collector value.

That number will change as gold moves.

For a more useful current estimate, check the Gold Kings gold and silver prices page or compare against a current precious-metals market quote.

A Gold Buffalo’s actual market value can be:

**Gold spot value

  • or – dealer market spread
  • possible bullion premium
  • possible collector premium**

This is why simply multiplying weight by gold price does not always tell the whole story.

Why Can a Gold Buffalo Be Worth More Than Its Gold Content?

American Gold Buffalos are highly recognizable government-issued bullion coins.

That recognition can create a premium above the raw value of the gold.

The size of that premium can vary according to:

  • Gold market conditions
  • Supply and demand
  • Coin condition
  • Year
  • Bullion versus proof issue
  • Mintage
  • Original packaging
  • Certification or grading
  • Dealer inventory
  • Collector demand

A common-date bullion coin may trade primarily on its gold content plus a modest market premium.

A proof, special issue or desirable graded coin can require a different evaluation.

That is why a gold coin should be identified before someone simply calculates its scrap value.

What Is the Difference Between a Bullion Gold Buffalo and a Proof Gold Buffalo?

This is one of the most important questions when determining value.

Bullion Gold Buffalo

The bullion version is primarily intended as a way to own physical gold.

Its value tends to track closely with:

one ounce of gold + the current market premium for the coin.

Bullion coins are distributed through the U.S. Mint’s authorized purchaser network rather than being sold directly to ordinary buyers by the Mint.

Proof Gold Buffalo

Proof coins are collector products made using a specialized minting process.

They have highly detailed surfaces and are normally sold in protective packaging. Proof Gold Buffalos from the U.S. Mint are struck at West Point and carry the W mint mark.

The U.S. Mint describes the proof as the collector version of the American Buffalo bullion coin.

Proof coins can have value beyond their gold content.

For example, the U.S. Mint listed its 2026 one-ounce American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin at $5,290. That is a retail collector-product price—not a guaranteed resale value—but it illustrates why proof value and melt value should not be treated as the same thing.

If you have a Gold Buffalo in a U.S. Mint box with a Certificate of Authenticity, keep the packaging with the coin when having it evaluated.

Are All American Gold Buffalos One Ounce?

Almost all Gold Buffalos people encounter are one-ounce coins, but there is an important exception.

In 2008, the U.S. Mint expanded the collector program and produced Gold Buffalos in:

  • 1 ounce
  • 1/2 ounce
  • 1/4 ounce
  • 1/10 ounce

The fractional coins carried face values of $25, $10 and $5 respectively, while the one-ounce coin remained $50.

The fractional program did not continue as a normal annual offering.

That makes 2008 fractional Gold Buffalos particularly important to identify correctly rather than assuming every Buffalo should simply be valued as a standard one-ounce bullion coin.

What Does the $50 Face Value Mean?

A one-ounce American Gold Buffalo has a legal-tender face value of:

$50

But you would never normally spend one for $50.

The face value primarily establishes the coin as legal U.S. tender.

Its precious-metal value is dramatically higher.

The U.S. Mint guarantees the stated weight, content and purity of its American Buffalo bullion coins.

If you inherit a Gold Buffalo and see “$50” on the reverse, do not assume that is what the coin is worth.

How Can You Tell If an American Gold Buffalo Is Real?

Because a genuine Gold Buffalo can be worth several thousand dollars, counterfeit coins are worth taking seriously.

An evaluation may consider several factors.

1. Weight

A standard one-ounce Buffalo should weigh approximately 31.103 grams.

A significant difference is a warning sign.

2. Diameter

The U.S. Mint specifies a diameter of:

32.70 mm

Weight and dimensions together provide useful information.

3. Design Details

Lettering, surface details, edge characteristics and design proportions can reveal obvious counterfeits.

4. Metal Composition

Professional precious-metal testing can help determine whether the coin’s surface composition is consistent with .9999 fine gold.

At Gold Kings, XRF technology can be used when appropriate to analyze precious-metal composition.

It is important to understand what XRF can and cannot tell you.

XRF testing is useful for identifying metal composition, but XRF alone should not automatically be considered complete proof that a coin is genuine.

A proper coin evaluation may consider:

  • Weight
  • Dimensions
  • Metal composition
  • Design
  • Physical characteristics
  • Type of coin
  • Known counterfeit indicators

Using several pieces of evidence is much more useful than relying on appearance alone.

Should You Clean an American Gold Buffalo?

No.

If you believe your Buffalo could have collector value, do not polish or clean it.

Cleaning can permanently change a coin’s surface and may reduce numismatic value.

Even if the coin has fingerprints, toning, residue or marks, it is generally better to leave it alone until it has been evaluated.

Gold itself does not tarnish the way silver does, but nearly pure 24K gold is comparatively soft.

That means Gold Buffalos can develop contact marks or scratches more easily than harder alloyed coins.

Handle the coin by its edges whenever possible.

Does the Year of a Gold Buffalo Matter?

Yes, although not every year carries a major premium.

For ordinary bullion Gold Buffalos, gold content often accounts for most of the value.

But certain issues may deserve additional attention because of:

  • Lower mintages
  • Proof status
  • Special issues
  • 2008 fractional denominations
  • High certified grades
  • Original government packaging
  • Collector demand

Before selling a Gold Buffalo, especially one in a holder or Mint packaging, determine exactly what version you have.

The safest rule is:

Never assume a collectible gold coin should automatically be treated as scrap gold.

How Gold Kings Evaluates American Gold Buffalo Coins

If you bring a Gold Buffalo to Gold Kings, the goal is to determine what you actually own before discussing its value.

An evaluation can include:

Identify the coin

First determine whether it is bullion, proof, fractional, graded or another special version.

Check weight and physical characteristics

A known U.S. Mint coin has known specifications.

Verify precious-metal content when appropriate

Professional testing, including XRF analysis when appropriate, can help evaluate whether the metal composition is consistent with the stated purity.

Check the current gold market

Because a standard Gold Buffalo contains one full ounce of fine gold, the current spot price provides an immediate baseline.

Consider value beyond melt

Proofs, unusual issues, packaging, certification or collector demand may affect the appropriate value.

That approach is particularly important with recognized coins.

A Gold Buffalo is not simply an unidentified piece of 24K scrap.

American Gold Buffalo FAQs

Is an American Gold Buffalo pure gold?

Yes. The standard American Gold Buffalo is .9999 fine, or 99.99% pure gold, which is generally described as 24-karat gold.

How many grams does a Gold Buffalo weigh?

The standard one-ounce American Gold Buffalo weighs approximately 31.103 grams.

How much gold is actually in a Gold Buffalo?

The standard coin contains exactly one troy ounce of fine gold according to U.S. Mint specifications.

Is a Gold Buffalo worth more than spot price?

It can be. Bullion Gold Buffalos frequently trade with a market premium, while proof, special or collectible versions may have additional value. Premiums change with market conditions.

Is a Gold Buffalo worth only $50?

No. The $50 inscription is its legal-tender face value. Its actual market value is primarily determined by its one ounce of gold plus any applicable premium.

What is the difference between a Gold Buffalo and a Buffalo nickel?

They use closely related James Earle Fraser designs, but they are completely different coins.

The historic Buffalo nickel is a five-cent base-metal coin.

The American Gold Buffalo is a modern 24K U.S. gold coin first issued in 2006.

Are there half-ounce Gold Buffalos?

Yes, but they are unusual. The U.S. Mint produced fractional 1/2-ounce, 1/4-ounce and 1/10-ounce American Buffalo collector coins in 2008.

Should I sell a Gold Buffalo as scrap gold?

Not automatically.

A recognized bullion or collectible coin should first be identified and evaluated as a coin. Its precious-metal value establishes an important baseline, but market or collector premiums may also matter.

Can Gold Kings test an American Gold Buffalo?

Gold Kings can evaluate qualifying gold coins and bullion. Professional testing such as XRF analysis may be used when appropriate along with weight, physical specifications and other characteristics.
