Current Gold & Silver Prices: Spot Price, Melt Value & Gold Value by Karat

Gold and silver prices move throughout the trading day. If you are trying to determine what a gold ring, chain, coin, bar, sterling silver item, or other precious metal is worth, the current spot price is the starting point—but it is not the same thing as the amount an item will sell for.

Below you can see the current market reference price for gold and silver, including the price per troy ounce, price per gram, and the approximate gold value per gram for common karats.

At Gold Kings, we use current precious-metal market information along with the item’s actual weight, tested purity, and type when evaluating gold and silver.

That distinction matters because a piece stamped 14K does not necessarily test at exactly the expected purity, and a gold coin or bullion bar may need to be evaluated differently from ordinary scrap jewelry.

What Is the Gold Spot Price?

The spot price of gold is the current market reference price for one troy ounce of nearly pure gold.

One troy ounce equals approximately 31.1035 grams.

So if gold were trading at a particular price per troy ounce, the pure-gold value per gram would be:

Gold spot price ÷ 31.1035 = approximate pure gold price per gram

But most jewelry is not pure gold.

A 10K ring contains much less gold than an 18K ring of the same weight. That is why knowing the karat or tested purity is essential when calculating value.

Gold Value Per Gram Depends on Karat

Gold jewelry is normally an alloy containing gold mixed with metals such as silver, copper, zinc, nickel, or palladium.

Common approximate purity levels include:

Gold KaratApproximate Gold Content
24K99.9%
22K91.7%
21K87.5%
18K75.0%
14K58.5%
12K50.0%
10K41.7%
9K37.5%

The live table above automatically calculates the approximate precious-metal value per gram using the current gold market price.

For example, 18K gold contains substantially more pure gold per gram than 10K gold. Two chains may weigh exactly the same amount but have very different melt values because their purity is different.

Spot Price vs. Melt Value vs. Actual Offer

These three numbers are often confused.

Spot Price

Spot is the market reference price of the precious metal itself.

For gold, it generally refers to the market value of a troy ounce of nearly pure gold.

For silver, it refers to the market value of a troy ounce of silver.

Melt Value

Melt value is the estimated value of the actual precious metal contained in an item.

For ordinary gold jewelry, the basic calculation is:

Weight × Gold Purity × Gold Price Per Gram = Approximate Melt Value

If you had 20 grams of 14K gold at approximately 58.5% purity:

20 grams × 58.5% = approximately 11.7 grams of pure gold content

That pure-gold content can then be multiplied by the current gold value per gram.

Melt value is still a theoretical precious-metal value. It is not automatically the amount a buyer will pay.

Actual Gold-Buying Offer

An offer is what a buyer is actually willing to pay for the item.

Several factors can affect that number:

  • Actual tested purity

  • Accurate weight

  • Stones or non-gold components

  • Refining and processing costs

  • Market-price movement

  • Type of item

  • Whether the item is jewelry, scrap, bullion, or a coin

  • Potential collector or resale value

  • Condition when the item has value beyond its metal content

This is why you should understand the weight, purity, current market price, and evaluation before deciding whether to sell.

Why Your Gold Stamp Is Only the Starting Point

Gold jewelry may be stamped:

  • 10K

  • 14K

  • 18K

  • 22K

  • 417

  • 585

  • 750

  • 916

  • 999

Those markings are useful, but a stamp alone does not prove exactly what an item contains.

Jewelry can have repairs, solder, plating, replacement parts, or manufacturing differences. Counterfeit and incorrectly marked jewelry also exists.

At Gold Kings, professional precious-metal testing can be used to help determine what an item actually contains rather than relying exclusively on its hallmark.

You can learn more about how XRF gold testing works.

XRF analysis can identify metals such as gold, silver, copper, platinum, palladium, and others and provide useful information about an item’s metallic composition.

How Much Is My Gold Worth Today?

To estimate the precious-metal value of ordinary gold jewelry, you need three main numbers:

  1. Weight in grams

  2. Actual gold purity

  3. Current gold value per gram

The live karat table on this page gives you a useful starting point.

For example, once you know a piece weighs 15 grams and tests as 18K gold, you can multiply its weight by the current approximate 18K gold value per gram.

That gives you an estimated melt value.

However, jewelry containing diamonds, valuable gemstones, designer branding, collectible characteristics, or other significant features should not automatically be treated as scrap.

Gold coins and bullion may also be valued differently.

What About Silver?

The same basic principle applies to silver.

Pure silver has a current market price per troy ounce and per gram, but many silver items are made from alloys.

For example, sterling silver is commonly marked 925, indicating approximately 92.5% silver.

Coins can be more complicated because different U.S. and foreign coins contain different percentages of silver, and some coins may have collector value beyond their precious-metal content.

Gold Kings evaluates silver jewelry, sterling silver, silver coins, bullion, and other qualifying precious-metal items. See the full list of what Gold Kings buys.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gold and Silver Prices

How often does the gold price change?

Gold trades in global markets, so its market price can move throughout the trading day. The price displayed above includes a timestamp so you can see when the market reference was most recently updated.

How much is one gram of gold worth?

That depends on purity. One gram of 24K gold contains considerably more pure gold than one gram of 10K gold. Use the live gold-by-karat table above for the current approximate precious-metal value per gram.

Is 14K gold really 58.5% gold?

14K jewelry is commonly associated with approximately 58.3%–58.5% gold content, and the hallmark 585 represents 58.5% gold. Actual jewelry can test somewhat differently, which is why professional testing can be useful.

Is melt value what I will get paid?

Not necessarily. Melt value estimates the underlying precious-metal content. An actual purchase offer takes additional factors into account.

Are gold coins worth only their melt value?

Not always. Some coins can have collector, numismatic, or market premiums above the value of their gold content. A coin should be evaluated before automatically treating it as scrap.

Does Gold Kings test gold?

Yes. Gold Kings uses professional precious-metal testing methods, including XRF technology when appropriate. Read more about XRF gold testing.
